About Brandt
For more than 50 years, Brandt Industrilakering has been a leader in the Danish powder coating market. Their success comes not only from quality but also from a culture of innovation — always looking for new ways to increase value for their customers.
When Brandt’s existing automation solution, developed with partner G.A. Hansen, left a gap in the final “touch-up” stage, they turned to Nordbo Robotics Mimic to complete the process.
The Challenge
Even with advanced powder coating booths, Brandt still relied on technicians to manually spray touch-ups:
- Workers in full environmental suits handled powder spraying in tough conditions.
- As a subcontractor, Brandt faced a high-mix, low-volume challenge — countless part shapes and sizes that were hard to automate consistently.
- Skilled workers for such a physically demanding job were increasingly difficult to find.
Brandt needed a solution that could handle variety, improve working conditions, and ensure consistent coverage.
The Solution: Mimic with UR Cobot
Together with G.A. Hansen, Nordbo Robotics deployed a Mimic Kit on a Universal Robots cobot.
The workflow was simple:
- A technician demonstrated the touch-up spray motion on a single unit.
- Mimic recorded the motion and the robot replicated it across all similar parts.
This approach allowed Brandt to:
- Achieve consistent coverage across their full product mix.
- Increase productivity by reducing downtime and rework.
- Improve working conditions, reducing time spent in protective suits.
The Results
- ✅ Reliable, repeatable touch-up spraying across varied product types
- ✅ Higher throughput and less downtime
- ✅ Safer, more ergonomic jobs for skilled workers
- ✅ Technicians remain central — using Mimic as a tool to transfer expertise instead of performing repetitive labour
Mimic in Action
Retro-fitting Made Simple
This project shows how Mimic can retro-fit into existing automated processes:
- Brandt already had a solution that achieved ~90% coverage.
- Mimic filled the last 10% gap — a critical but labour-intensive stage.
- The result: a complete, flexible automation setup without rebuilding from scratch.
Conclusion
By combining Brandt’s industry expertise, G.A. Hansen’s painting knowledge, and Nordbo Robotics’ no-code programming platform, touch-ups were transformed from a painful manual task into a safe, scalable, and automated process.
